Translation Service

Get History Today understands that many collectors would like to have some of the Japanese characters on their Good Luck Flags or Senninbari translated into English.  The name of the Japanese soldier who owned your Flag, the organization or person presenting the item as a gift, various patriotic slogans, and names of well-wishers may often be found on a Good Luck Flag.  Similar information is sometimes seen on Senninbari as well. 

Traditional translation services may be quite expensive to use for this type of work.  Most have a high minimum fee just to begin your project.  To translate an entire character covered Flag, for example is often cost prohibitive.  For a maximum fee of $75.00 (your quote may be less), Get History Today will have a native Japanese speaker review images of your Good Luck Flag or Senninbari for content.  We will translate up to ten lines of characters.  Remember, some forms of script are quite specialized or archaic and we may be unable to read them.  In addition, many seals (hanko) are nearly impossible to read.

By reviewing your clear, detailed digital images or photographs, Get History Today will provide you with a price quote before you agree to have the work performed.  Any item that appears to our translator to be inauthentic based on an evaluation of the characters present will be identified as such to you and will not be translated.  Information, if recorded on the Flag or Senninbari will be provided to you in the following order:

1. The name of the soldier-owner,
2. The name of the person or organization presenting the item,
3. Patriotic slogans,
4. Personal exultations or messages,
5. Names of well-wishers,
6. Seals (hanko.)
 
The location of your translations will be identified clearly by letter (A, B, C, D, etc.) on a copy/image of your Flag or Senninbari.  Those same translations will be spelled out on a separate sheet for your easy comparison.  Owning an authentic Japanese Good Luck Flag or Senninbari is truely one of the most awesome artifacts from the World War Two era.  Knowing some of the history of it, based on the characters recorded helps bring that historic item to life!

At times we offer for sale various items, depending upon your wants and availability.  Collectors interested in purchasing only authentic World War Two era Good Luck Flags and Senninbari similar to the ones shown here are encouraged to contact us.  Individual prices will vary and are determined by rarity and condition.  Flags and Senninbari will generally not come to you translated.  We endeavor to describe fully the condition of each item we sell.  Should a Flag or Senninbari not be as described, we will gladly refund your purchase price including the cost of shipping and insurance.  Every item must be returned to us in the same condition it was sent.  Items sent to you must be insured for the full purchase price including tracking.  We will not misrepresent values on overseas Customs forms, so please do not ask us.
